From the land of Arabian Nights, comes a story teller of a partially different kind.

rabbi: Hurricane is Bush's punishment for pullout support

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a former chief rabbi and the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas movement, said on Wednesday that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for U.S. President George W. Bush's support for Israel's Gaza pullout.

You can read more here

Here is my favorite part:

Yosef also said recent natural disasters were the result of a lack of Torah study and that Katrina's victims suffered "because they have no God," singling out black people.

Start reading the Torah people! ..... you have been warned.

I only have one question. Why do religeous men of all faiths like to dress in drag?

Here is my favorite part:

"He has a special style he uses when he speaks to the people," said Yaacobson. "He tells jokes that you may like, and may not like. When you just tell the joke, you are ignoring the connotation."

C'mon people. Can't you take a joke?. Sheesh!

This way they can ensure that no woman can ever want to sleep with them, and they can focus on the religion. You know it's true. If the pope was a fit 30-year-old in tight jeans and a white t-shirt, he would never get around to denouncing the gay people, since he'd be too busy sleeping with them.

Dear Ihath,

Hmmm... Was he trying to keep up with the Joneses? Or was it the other way around?

"In reaction to Hurricane Katrina and the destruction in its wake, a high-ranking Kuwaiti official, Muhammad Yousef Al-Mlaifi, who is director of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Endowment's research center, published an article titled "The Terrorist Katrina is One of the Soldiers of Allah, But Not an Adherent of Al-Qaeda." [1] The article appeared August 31, 2005 in the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa.

The following are excerpts from his article:

What weirdness comes out of religious people when a distaster happens. I have NO PROBLEM understanding that forces of nature exist and that's the way G-d made them. Why do "holy people" have trouble with that concept? Why does every nut cleric in the universe knowing they are going to get "press coverage" if they speak nonsense after a disaster open up their mouths and let idiocy spew out? And they are so ungodly they do it for ego, popularity and attention? Why don't these ppl crawl back under their rock and quit making the religion of good and decent people out to be a brutal mockery of faith?/rant

And isn't this the same guy that declared all sesame seeds and thereby hummus to be non-kosher because it had to be shelled properly or some other craziness? And, I think he's the same guy that thinks that the Ashkenazi Jews are "the problem". I think he comes from Morrocco...but anyway...how do these people gain followings? Like Muqtada al sadr??? The stranger they are the more they gain a crowd of followers.

Emmunah,
When I lived in Jerusalem, I used to love listening to the sayings of Ovadya Yosef because they they are so entertaining. My all time favorite is

"A man walking between two women is like a man walking between two goats"

People asked him to clarify what that means. Does it mean that a woman is like a goat? or does it mean that a woman becomes like a goat only when a man walks next to her?

He refused to explain.

Unfortunately he is or rather was Iraqi. Born in Baghdad and is Mizrahi, however, he is insane and studied at an Ashkenazi yeshiva. Even though he disliked the discrimination, he seems to have accepted and taken it to new levels with his own hate of Arabs.

Hey now, not all protestants are party poopers. My flavor presently sports a black robe in the pulpit, though in the 70’s, there was a preacher who favored bright blue, with black bands. Quite striking, actually, almost distracting. :)

It is interesting that we, people both of “faith” and not of “faith”, can spot error almost the moment it is made when articulated by robed men, and by men in suits talking as if they were in robes. Heck, even as a youngster, I was able to spot the falsehood, indeed corruption, in the claim voiced my some close to me that AIDS was God’s punishment for sin. But, now as an adult, it seems to me far more difficult to spot the error in claims by those sans robes, whose voice purports to speak from another source, and despite its very loud protestations to the contrary, articulates, or more accurately, commands a faith required of all its followers if they are to avoid punishment. Personally, I think these folks should be required to wear robes too.

Dear Ihath,

High court justices also wear robes, at least in the USA. College graduates and faculty wear robes during their commencement ceremonies. Many high school grads also.

I guess wearing a robe is supposed to indicate that one is very special in some way at some time. Like after taking a shower/bath -- at that point in time I am very clean and so special. But I don't wear a robe, just underpants. So how is anyone to know about my specialness?

So you see, we all need to wear a robe sometime.
